Om Vishnupad 108 Tridandi Swami Sri Srimat Bhakti Sravan Tirtha Goswami Maharaj ki Jai !

 

Once a young boy went to a Gurukula to learn the Vedas. He was very excited since his Master was renowned and an adept in the Shastras. He went to his Master and said – “Gurudev, I would like to learn the Vedas from you”.

The Master immediately replied, “Excellent my dear boy, but you are aware that it is not a one or two year course. It is a twelve year course. Are you still prepared to learn it”? The boy was extremely eager and immediately signed up for the course. In the ancient system of Vedic education the student would move into a Gurukul and learn the Vedas for twelve years.

So this boy enrolled with the Master and learned the Vedas for twelve years. At the end of the course, there was an examination to certify that the student has passed all the courses. When it was time for the pupil to graduate, he fixed the date with the Master for graduation.

On that day, the boy went and presented himself before his Guru for the test. The Guru told him that he was very busy and that he would not have time to conduct the exam for him. It is a normal procedure for the master to have his disciples recite certain portion of the Vedas and then they are graded appropriately.

He asked the boy to go to the backyard and stand next to a particular tree. He asked him to recite a certain part of the Vedas [Anuvakya]. Upon completion of the recitation, the tree would shed some leaves. The master asked the boy to count the number of leaves as they signified the number of mistakes committed during the recital.

This was a new kind of test he was eager to take the novel test. The boy was aware of the fact that before reciting the Anuvakya, he had to invoke Lord Ganesha. The moment he invoked Ganesha, all the leaves from the tree fell down.
The young boy was baffled by the incident.

He went into the Master’s chamber and narrated the whole incident. The Master immediately understood what had happened. He told him that before one invokes Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna or any other deity, one needed to remember and mentally salute his Guru first. Meditate on the most compassionate soul who has bestowed you with this knowledge. The Guru is verily the ncarnation of the Lord Himself.

Guru bestowing us with the knowledge of the Supreme Lord is not to be considered a normal human being and that is the first person we must think about when we begin any activity now matter how mundane. Doing so will automatically lead to a sense of non-doership and humility. the most important qualities for a disciple.

The moment one thinks about the Guru, that form of the Lord who has incarnated on the earth to save us he will be liberated. We should always meditate on our own Guru and be thankful for all the gifts of spiritual wisdom we have received from him or her.
